How this works

Almost every high bill traces back to two or three appliances, not to the dozens of small ones people worry about. A 1.5-tonne air conditioner running eight hours a day consumes more than an entire home's lighting, fans and electronics combined. Finding the culprit is a matter of multiplying wattage by hours, which is what this calculator does.

Units consumed are watts multiplied by hours of use multiplied by days, divided by 1,000. That figure lands in a tariff slab, and in most Indian states slabs are progressive — so the marginal unit from a heavy appliance is billed at your highest rate, not your average rate. Use your top slab rate here for the most realistic number.

The efficiency comparison shows what the same duty cycle costs on a more efficient model. BEE star ratings are re-tabled periodically, so a 5-star unit bought several years ago may perform like a 3-star unit today. CO₂ is computed at 0.71 kg per kWh, the CEA grid emission factor for the Indian grid.

Common questions

Where do I find the wattage of my appliance?
Check the nameplate sticker on the back or base of the unit. If it lists amps instead, multiply by 230 to get watts. For inverter air conditioners use the rated input power, not the cooling capacity in tonnes.
Do inverter ACs really use less?
Yes, once the room reaches setpoint the compressor throttles instead of cycling on and off, typically cutting consumption 20–30% over a long run. The saving is largest when the AC runs for several continuous hours, and smallest for short bursts.
Does switching appliances off at the socket matter?
For a single device, marginally. Across a whole home, standby draw of 5–15 W per device on ten devices is 3–10 units a month. It is real but small compared with heating, cooling and pumping loads.
