How this works
Green hydrogen economics are dominated by two numbers: the delivered price of renewable electricity and the capacity utilisation of the electrolyser. Electricity typically accounts for 60–75% of the levelised cost, which is why India's National Green Hydrogen Mission targets cheap round-the-clock renewable supply rather than cheaper stacks alone.
The specific energy consumption input is the honest measure of stack efficiency. Alkaline and PEM systems land around 50–55 kWh per kilogram at the system level once rectifiers, compression and balance of plant are included — vendors quoting 45 kWh/kg are usually citing stack-only figures at beginning of life, before degradation.
Utilisation matters because the capital charge is spread over kilograms produced. Running an electrolyser only on daytime solar caps utilisation near 25%, quadrupling the capital component per kilogram relative to continuous operation. Hybrid solar-plus-wind-plus-storage supply is how projects push utilisation past 60%.

- What counts as competitive in India today?
- Landed grey hydrogen from natural gas sits roughly in the ₹150–250 per kg band depending on gas prices. Green hydrogen projects are targeting under ₹200 per kg to compete without a subsidy, and mission incentives are designed to bridge the remaining gap.
- How much water does this consume?
- About nine litres of demineralised water per kilogram of hydrogen by stoichiometry, and 15–25 litres of raw water once treatment and cooling losses are counted. For coastal projects the desalination cost is small relative to power.
- Does the calculator include storage and transport?
- No. It gives cost at the electrolyser gate. Compression to 350–700 bar, storage and trucking can add ₹40–120 per kg depending on distance and volume, so treat this figure as a production floor.
